What does “a portion” mean?

A portion is the amount of a particular food in a single meal. The "Healthy Eating Plate" encourages the consumption of foods such as bread, grains, and potatoes by suggesting to consume five portions of vegetables and fruits a day. This does not mean more portions but larger portions.

Portion sizes depend on a person's age, sex, physical activity level, weight, and health status.

Factors which affect total energy requirements and portion sizes:


-Gender: Women require less energy than men
- Age: The elderly require less energy than teenagers and young adults
- Being overweight: An overweight individual (according to his/her height) should take less energy to reach his/her ideal weight
- Physical activity level: Physically active people require more energy

"How much should we eat?
Energy (calorie) requirement is different for each individual. The "Healthy Eating Plate" suggests the proportion of foods for everyone, regardless of their total energy requirement.
